A white light transilluminator is basically a light box for science  and molecular biology experiments. Imagine a flat, light-colored box with a translucent surface on top. Inside the box, there are bright lights that shine upwards and a built-in filter plate to diffuse the back-lit light. When you place something on the translucent surface, the light shines through it and makes it easier to see.

They are especially useful for looking at things that have been stained in a science experiment. For example, if you’ve done an experiment to separate different colors in food dye, you might stain a piece of paper with the separated colors. The transilluminator can help you see the colors clearer because it shines light right through the paper.

Here are some other things you can use a white light transilluminator for:

  • Seeing tiny holes in things, like defects in a leaf
  • Looking at X-rays (the kind doctors take)
  • Reading film negatives (like the old kind of camera film)
  • Silver stained polyacrylamide protein gels
  • Coomassie stained gels
  • Western blot autorads
